Greenheart Exchange’s Teach USA program recruits highly qualified teachers from all over the world who teach a variety of subjects, including elementary education, STEM, world languages, and special education. Recently, one of our teachers, Jairoh, from the Philippines and teaching in Missouri, shared how wonderful his program has been while highlighting the undeniable impact cultural exchange offers. Jairoh has benefitted personally and professionally, making new connections and reaching new horizons in his teaching experience. Here’s Jairoh reflecting on his Teach USA program!

“They say that the beauty of life lies in the journey, not the destination—and my journey at Newtown Harris R-III School District has been nothing short of beautiful. As I look back on my first year here, I’m filled with gratitude and joy for the experiences that have shaped me and the people who have welcomed me with open hearts.

This year, I was uncertain about how things would unfold, with changes in leadership at my school – a new superintendent and a new principal. Change can be daunting, and I wondered if I would receive the same support as before. But as the saying goes, “When one door closes, another opens.” My new principal, Mrs. Bain, and superintendent, Mrs. Hubbard, have not only met my expectations but exceeded them. Their unwavering support has shown me that true leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about people. And in this community, people truly care for one another. The school board and community have been very supportive, and I’m grateful to continue working here.

The warmth I’ve felt from the local community has been nothing short of heartwarming. “A friend in need is a friend indeed,” and I’ve found that friendship here in abundance. Members of the Newtown Christian Church, like Sandy, Dany, Amy, and Mrs. Neff, have gone out of their way to make me feel at home. Whether it’s a simple gesture of kindness or a shared meal, these moments remind me that “it’s not where you are, but who you’re with that really matters.”

One of the highlights of my time here was a trip to an Asian grocery store in Des Moines, Iowa. It might sound simple, but it was a moment that brought me closer to home. What made it even more special was that Mrs. Hubbard, my superintendent, offered to accompany me. We took turns driving—a small adventure that made me realize, “It’s not the destination, but the journey,” and how every experience, big or small, contributes to our growth. Even though I don’t yet have my own car, the opportunity to drive here in the U.S. was a milestone that I’ll always cherish.

What has truly enriched my time here is the cultural exchange. Sharing meals, music, and traditions with the people around me has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the beauty of diversity. As they say, “Variety is the spice of life,” and my experiences here have added flavor to my journey in ways I never expected.

Looking ahead, I am excited about what the future holds. My journey with Greenheart Exchange has only just begun, and I am eager to see where it will take me next. “Life is a journey, not a race,” and I’m grateful to be on this path, surrounded by a community that feels like family.

My time at Newtown Harris R-III School District has been a chapter filled with love, support, and countless moments of joy. As I continue to grow and learn, I carry with me the hope that this journey will lead to even greater adventures, memories, and connections. Here’s to the road ahead—may it be as wonderful as the journey so far.”“Dr. Jay” – Jairoh Nicolas Taracina
