More than a dozen Chinese exchange students got a taste of Chicago—and the American experience—this summer with a visit to local attractions, including iconic restaurant chain, Giordano’s Pizza.
In an interview with local Chicago news station, WGN, Greenheart’s Marcelle Benedicta, Vice President, Marketing & External Relations, spoke on the inaugural outing, conceived at Greenheart’s 2024 HSP conference.
Greenheart local coordinator, Tammy Zilinski, worked to match these students with their host families, and organized the exciting activities for the program. She and Benedicta led the excursions, ensuring the students enjoyed every moment of their time in the Windy City.
The students spent time in preparation courses to improve their English skills, but also took breaks from their academics to get a feel for the daily American life. In the suburbs, they immersed themselves in small town living and toured a school, police station, and fire station. They also had the opportunity to visit big name attractions like the Lincoln Park Zoo, Wrigley Field, and 360 Chicago, where they caught breathtaking views of the skyline and Lake Michigan!

A Beacon of Hope
While amazing memories were made, the celebration came amid concerns over federal budget cuts to exchange programs. An initial proposal called for a 93% funding reduction, but the U.S. House of Representatives ultimately approved just a 5% cut, allowing most programs to continue.
“It is really, really important to continue this program because many, many people have benefited—even people who are current leaders in countries around the world,” Benedicta noted.

While students pay for their own exchange experience, programs and staff rely partly on government support. Without it, opportunities like this Chicago visit may be lost. Beyond the fun and adventure, these exchanges carry deep value, such as helping young people build empathy, broaden perspectives, and strengthen ties between cultures.
From sharing pizza to exploring the city’s iconic lakefront, their time here was more than sightseeing. This was a celebration of cultural understanding, friendship, and the power of connection across borders.
