By Julie Zehner, Greenheart Regional Director & Host Mom
Hi! Let me introduce myself. My name is Julie, and I’m married to an amazing guy named Tom. We have three grown children—two boys and a girl—and we’re now the proud grandparents of two little ones. Our kids grew up surrounded by exchange students, and now our grandkids get to share in that same wonderful experience.
My own journey with cultural exchange began in high school when my family hosted Anabelle from Costa Rica. She quickly became part of our family and is still lovingly known as my “Costa Rican sister.” She stood by my side at our wedding, and naturally, we chose Costa Rica for our honeymoon. For many years, Anabelle worked for the airlines and visited often before transitioning into a teaching career.

Our children first met Anabelle when they were young, and their bond only deepened after we took a family trip to Costa Rica when they were between 10 and 14 years old. That adventure—zip-lining across the rainforest, tasting amazing local food, and learning Spanish—was truly unforgettable. Anabelle remains very close to us, and the connection we share is something incredibly special.

Hosting her was our family’s first glimpse into the wider world, and we had no idea then just how profoundly it would shape our lives as the years went on.
