Strengthening Global Connections in Maine: Highlights from the 2025 Governor’s International Breakfast

By Anya McGuckin, Host Relations Manager, Career Advancement Program at Greenheart Exchange.

On the morning of Monday June 9th, I had the pleasure of attending the 2025 Governor’s International Breakfast, hosted by the World Affairs Council of Maine and the Maine International Trade Center at the Holiday Inn in Portland.

High Profile Guest Speakers Shed Light on the Local Community of Maine

The event brought together leaders from across various industries, all united by a shared focus on expanding Maine’s global business ties. This year’s discussion centered on Maine’s growing connections with the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, highlighting the state’s strategic position and potential for future collaboration.

Among the speakers were Ben Ford, Honorary Consul for Iceland, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Darryl Lion, and Nathaniel Shehata, Vice President of Liner Services at Eimskip, the Icelandic shipping company. Their insights into how Maine’s location can drive growth in these dynamic regions were both fascinating and encouraging. We also had the opportunity to hear from Bernadette Jordan, Consul General of Canada in Boston, followed by Maine Governor Janet Mills, who shared her perspective on the importance of international partnerships to Maine’s economic future.

Introducing Greenheart’s Career Advancement Program to Business Leaders!

I used this opportunity to network and speak with several business leaders across the state. I shared the benefits of hosting international Interns and Trainees with Greenheart Exchange’s Career Advancement Program. Many were excited and expressed interest in exploring how international participants could contribute to their teams. It was important for these organizations to know that Greenheart has a local presence in Maine. I received several thoughtful questions, such as: what is the duration of the program? Is there a fee for host organizations? Can you source candidates for us? The business leaders were pleased to learn that participants can train for up to 18 months. I also clarified that there was no cost for hosts to participate in the program. Furthermore, at Greenheart pride ourselves in sourcing talented candidates from across the globe.

Looking Ahead!

Events like this are a fantastic way to introduce our Career Advancement Program to new audiences. These events open doors for future partnerships. They help raise awareness about the mutual benefits of cultural exchange and global workforce development. A big thank you to the organizers and everyone who made this inspiring morning possible. I’m excited about the new opportunities that may arise for our participants—and for Maine’s role in fostering international collaboration.
