Still Experiencing Firsts: Reflections from Our Dominican Republic Job Fair

By Emily Howell, Host Relations Director, Work and Travel Program

After 25 international hiring events, I stepped into the Dominican Republic for the first time this December. It’s a privilege to still feel the thrill of a “first”—and this trip gave me exactly that: a fresh sense of connection, gratitude, and a reminder of why this work matters so much.

Volunteering at Hogar Renacer Orphanage

One of the most impactful firsts for me happened when our team spent time at Hogar Renacer, an orphanage dedicated to providing care, love, and stability to children in need. We finger-painted side-by-side, made friendship bracelets, and played balloon and dancing games. For all the events I’ve attended over the years, this experience stands apart—it was a powerful reminder of the impact time and human connection can have.

A Special Energizer for Candidates!

My second unexpected first came in the morning of the Job Fair itself. I’ve seen many ways to energize participants before interviews, but I had never seen dancers and confetti cannons used to kick off the day. It was electric. Watching the participants’ joy in welcoming us and sharing their culture—while their nerves seemed to melt away—set a beautiful tone for the day.

An Invaluable Partnership!

I also have to shine a spotlight on OFIT, our incredible partner in the Dominican Republic. If there’s a gold standard for hospitality, preparation, and logistics, they’ve set it. Every detail—truly down to the wire—was handled with care and professionalism. Their warmth and meticulous organization made us feel supported from the moment we arrived until the final interview wrapped. They are, without question, five-star hosts.

The Profound Impact of In-person Hiring!

And while this event brought many firsts, one thing hasn’t changed—the profound impact of meeting participants face-to-face. Standing in the room with them, hearing their motivation, witnessing their excitement and determination—it’s a reminder of why these programs exist. Every Job Fair marks the beginning of a potentially life-changing experience, not just for the participants but for all of us who get to witness their journey start.

Final Thoughts!

Even after 25 international events, I’m grateful to still be surprised, inspired, and moved. The Dominican Republic offered a great reminder that there are always more “firsts” to be found if you stay open to them.
