By Joe Burns, Placement Director at Greenheart Exchange
As Summer Work Travel participants arrive across the U.S., Host Organizations play a key role in helping them stay safe while enjoying all that your community has to offer.
Please take time to review common seasonal safety topics with your participants, including biking and using scooters safely. This means wearing helmets, using sidewalks where allowed, and following traffic laws when riding in the street. Encourage participants to wear reflective clothing and use bikes or scooters equipped with reflectors and front and rear lights.

Other important reminders include hiking with proper footwear and maps, swimming only in designated areas, boating with life jackets, and staying hydrated, especially during high temperatures. Walking in groups and avoiding isolated areas at night can also help prevent unsafe situations.
