By Kathryn Vergara, Greenheart J-1 teacher.
Participating in Greenheart’s TeachUSA exchange program as a J1 teacher in the United States has profoundly transformed my life. Back in the Philippines, I enjoyed a thriving career as a school administrator, yet I felt the urge to step out of my comfort zone, broaden my horizons, and seek greener pastures. The journey that followed was nothing short of extraordinary.
Opportunities and Support
Upon my arrival in the United States, I encountered a multitude of challenges that felt like uncharted waters. The diverse people, rich cultures, and unique traditions were surprising and enlightening. There was a fresh learning opportunity each day, while engaging with students and parents or participating in professional development activities. Thankfully, with the unwavering support of my administrators and colleagues at my host school, I navigated these trials with resilience. It was not always easy; adjusting to my new environment and the different practices at my school took several months.
Cultural Exchange and Professional Growth
Now in my third year on the Teach USA program with Greenheart, I can confidently say that I have made significant progress. I have grown more adept at classroom instruction and behavior management. The trust placed in me by my administrators to lead professional development sessions is a testament to my development as an educator. This offered me opportunities to share my culture with the students and coworkers. This has been enjoyable and educational.
Thanks to the Greenheart TeachUSA program, I have become a better person and a more effective educator. The program enhanced my professional skills and deepened my appreciation for diversity and collaboration. I look forward to continuing this rewarding path and contributing positively to the educational community here in the United States.
Hiring international teachers brings a unique set of skills to classrooms and opens the door to students to experience the world through their foreign teachers. The questions students ask about their teacher’s home country are used to supplement their learning experience. Host schools understand how invaluable an experience it is to have international teachers.
