Greenheart Teacher Honored as One of the Golden Icons in Education and Excellence by Generation Thrive of the Golden State Warriors Foundation!

Greenheart International Teacher, Josephil Saraspe from the Philippines, was honored as one of the Golden Icons in Education and Excellence by Generation Thrive of the Golden State Warriors Foundation. He was celebrated as one of the educators across the Bay Area to have made meaningful contributions to youth development. We connected with Josephil to ask about his Teach USA Program experience and to highlight his accomplishments and recognition.

From the Philippines to the United Stated of America on Greenheart’s Teach USA Program

My name is Josephil Saraspe, and I am currently a Grade 8 Mathematics teacher at Lodestar in Oakland, California. As an educator originally from the Philippines, I have always believed in the power of education to transform lives. This belief is what led me to apply for the Greenheart’s Teach USA program. I saw it as a unique and life-changing professional development opportunity. It would not only enrich my teaching practices but also broaden my perspective as a global educator.

Teaching in the United States on Greenheart’s Teach USA Program

Teaching in the United States has given me the incredible opportunity to work within a diverse and multicultural learning environment. At Lodestar, my classroom is a reflection of a wide spectrum of cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. This diversity challenges me to be a more inclusive, adaptable, and culturally responsive educator. I’ve learned that teaching math goes beyond numbers and equations—it’s also about connecting with students in meaningful ways. I also develop an understanding of how their individual stories shape the way they learn.

The Most Rewarding Aspect of Being an International Teacher in the United States

The daily opportunity to share my own culture while learning from others is very rewarding. I take pride in sharing traditions, values, and stories from home with my students and colleagues. At the same time, I am constantly learning from my peers, the community, and my students. This mutual exchange of knowledge and experience has made me not only a better teacher, but also a more open-minded and empathetic person.

The Impact of Greenheart’s Teach USA Program as a Teacher

Being part of the Teach USA program has reaffirmed my passion for teaching and my commitment to lifelong learning. I am grateful for this journey and look forward to the continued growth it brings, both professionally and personally.

Remarkable Recognition by the Host school and local community

Thanks to my school leader’s nomination, I was recently honored as one of the Golden Icons in Education and Excellence. It was by Generation Thrive of the Golden State Warriors Foundation. This initiative recognizes educators who are making meaningful contributions to youth development and helping the next generation thrive. It is across the Bay Area. It was a truly unforgettable experience to be standing on the court of the Chase Center. I stood alongside passionate and inspiring educators. It served as a powerful reminder of the impact we are making in our communities.

Final Thoughts and Reflections

Being given the chance to grow professionally in the U.S. has already been a remarkable journey. To now also be recognized for my contributions is humbling and deeply fulfilling. None of this would have been possible without your support and the opportunity to be part of this transformative program. I am here because of your belief in educators like me—and for that, I am truly grateful.

Thank you, Josephil, for sharing your inspiring program experience with Greenheart and fellow educators! We appreciate the positive impact you’ve had on your host school and students! We wish you the very best with the remainder of your program.
