Intro about myself!
My name is Melvin Ama, a Special Education teacher at Dr. Maude A. Sanders Primary School in Peoria Public Schools District 150, Illinois, where I serve in the Life Skills program supporting students with diverse learning needs in developing essential daily living and functional skills.

My Journey from the Philippines to the United Stated of America on Greenheart’s Teach USA Program
My journey through the Teach USA Cultural Exchange Program has had a profound and lasting impact on both my professional and personal growth. Coming from the Philippines, the experience broadened my perspective on education by exposing me to inclusive practices, diverse teaching strategies, and student-centered approaches that strengthened my ability to meet the needs of learners from different cultural and academic backgrounds. Beyond instruction, the program deepened my cultural awareness and strengthened my connections with students, families, and colleagues, reinforcing my commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Recipient of Donald M. Phares Award. This is a highly selective annual recognition conferred by Peoria Public Schools District 150. It is awarded to only one teacher districtwide in honor of exceptional teaching performance and impact on student achievement.
Overcoming Challenges
When I first arrived in 2021, I faced challenges. That included adjusting to a new culture, navigating a different classroom management system, and understanding student behaviors. However, these experiences became opportunities for growth that shaped me into a more resilient, reflective, and adaptable educator. Over time, I developed stronger instructional practices. I built meaningful relationships and gained confidence in my role. I ultimately completing the program successfully, an achievement I once thought would be difficult. I’m proud to be recognized as the Teacher of the Year in my school district. I’m also proud of receiving the Award of Excellence from the Illinois State Board of Education is also a milestone. These milestones reflect my dedication and the transformative impact of the Greenheart’s Teach USA Program.

This award is the highest honor conferred by ISBE in recognition of outstanding educators.
The Most Meaningful Aspect of Having International Teachers at Our School
International exchange teachers bring diversity of perspectives to their community. As part of the first group of exchange teachers in our district, we were warmly welcomed. We were given the opportunity to share our cultural backgrounds and teaching practices, enriching both instruction and school culture.
International Teachers Share Their Culture to Enrich Host Schools!
I have been grateful to share my Filipino culture with my students and colleagues. That helped foster greater understanding, inclusivity, and connection within the school. In return, my host school has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and collaboration. I also learned about the importance of creating a truly student-centered classroom where every learner feels valued and supported. Through this experience, I have grown as a teacher and as a leader. This growth continues to shape my impact on students and guide my professional journey forward.
