Greenheart Teacher Participated in Texas Mining and Reclamation Association (TMRA) Teacher Summer Workshop

Greenheart International Teacher Mark Ahiale from Ghana was one of the 16 teachers selected to participate in a five-day Texas Mining and Reclamation Association (TMRA) Workshop (July 13–18th, 2025). Mark had the opportunity to share insights about Ghanaian culture, mining, and other local practices, while learning from educators from various countries.

We connected with Mark to ask about his Teach USA Program experience and his participation in the TMRA Workshop. Here’s what he shared with us!

From Ghana to the U.S. on Greenheart’s Teach USA Program

My name is Mark Evans Dodzi Ahiale, from Ghana (West Africa). I currently serve as a Special Education and Life Skills teacher at Harmony School of Science in San Antonio, Texas. I joined through the Greenheart Exchange Teach USA Program and I can confidently say this opportunity has been transformative; both for my professional development and on a personal level.

Greenheart’s Teach USA Program Transforms Teachers Professionally

Before coming to the U.S., my experience with special education and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) was limited. Since joining Harmony, I’ve gained practical strategies for supporting students with diverse learning needs. My confidence in navigating the American education system has grown significantly.

My Successful Participation in the TMRA Teacher Summer Workshop

The highlight was my participation in the TMRA (Texas Mining and Reclamation Association) Teacher Summer Workshop which was held on July 13-18th, 2025, in San Antonio. I was one of the sixteen educators selected nationwide. The workshop blended professional learning with cultural exchange. I had the opportunity to share insights about Ghanaian mining practices and cultural traditions. At teh same time, I learned about American mining, land reclamation, and environmental policies. Additionally, I built valuable connections with educators from across the country and abroad.

The Impact of Greenheart’s Teach USA Program on International Teachers, Host Schools and Local Communities

What draw me to the Greenheart Teach USA Program is its commitment to cultural and educational exchange. I’ve been able to introduce elements of Ghanaianculture to my students and colleagues. That happened through presentations, school events, and community engagement. In turn, I’ve immersed myself in American traditions, from Thanksgiving to school spirit events. That deepened my understanding of the community here in the US.

The Positive Role of Host School on the Success of My Teach USA Program

What I value most is the culture of openness and respect fostered by my host school. The administration and staff actively welcome international perspectives. I feel recognized as an educator and as a representative of my culture. U.S. schools benefit from hosting international teachers. We bring global viewpoints, innovative methodologies, and help cultivate a truly inclusive environment.

Greenheart’s Teach USA Program Fosters Cultural Exchange and Professional Growth

I highly recommend Greenheart’s Teach USA Program to any school preparing students for a globalized future. It creates lasting professional and cultural growth, and drives a substantial impact on students and educators.

Thank you, Mark, for sharing your inspiring program experience with Greenheart and fellow educators! We appreciate the positive impact you’ve had on your host school and students! We wish you the very best with the remainder of your program.
