Greenheart Teacher Takes Three American Teacher Colleagues to her Home Country over Spring Break!

Greenheart Teacher Takes Three American Teacher Colleagues to her Home Country over Spring Break!

My name is Solandka Julien, a 6th grade teacher of eleven years. I travelled to the U.S. on Greenheart’s Teach USA Program. I’m currently living in Florida and working at Living Water Christian Academy. I had an incredible opportunity to bring my American coworkers to Grand Bahama for an unforgettable first-time experience. From the moment we arrived at the port to the day we returned to the U.S., the excitement never faded. They were immediately captivated by the island’s beauty, culture, and warm atmosphere. Being their first time in Grand Bahama, they embraced every moment with pure joy and curiosity.

One of the highlights of the trip was the food. They made it their mission to try almost every authentic Bahamian dish, and they absolutely loved it! From fresh seafood to traditional native meals, each bite was a new adventure. They especially fell in love with the local soda—it was such a favorite that they brought some back to America!

Immersing in the Local Culture

Furthermore, the experience became even more meaningful as they got to meet my Rotary family. That was through Rotary International as well as my immediate family. My mom was overjoyed to host them—she cooked delicious meals, made sure they were comfortable, and treated them like her own. Her warmth and hospitality made them feel right at home.

We also visited my former workplace and the school where I previously taught. They had the opportunity to meet my former boss and students, and they were given a full tour of the classrooms. It was such a proud and heartwarming moment for me to share that part of my journey with them.

Of course, the adventure didn’t stop there! They enjoyed exciting activities like riding jet cars along the beach and even swimming with the famous pigs—an experience they will never forget. Every day was filled with laughter, excitement, and new discoveries.

The Highlight of the Trip

The highlight of our trip was how much my American colleagues embraced the culture, especially the native dishes. From beginning to end, they had an amazing time. This wasn’t just a trip—it was a joyful, first-time experience filled with connection, culture, and unforgettable memories.

Thank you Solandka for sharing your culture with your American colleagues! Thank you for representing cultural exchange, beautifully. We extend our thanks to your family back home, too. We wish a wonderful rest of your program.
