What is your name, the name of your school, and your role at the school?
My name is Jhamcarlos Escoto, and I’m a 7th Grade Language Arts Teacher at Yearling Middle School. I’m also a Professional Learning Community Leader for 7th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies, and the Yearbook Sponsor.
Has Greenheart’s Teach USA Program had a long-term impact on you? How so?
Being a teacher in the U.S. has left indelible marks in my teaching career. I have broadened my educational perspective of literacy. In my teaching, I integrated culture and collaborated with colleagues from around the world. That helped me better respond to student learning. It also empowered students to use their talents to succeed in their endeavors. I have also expanded my leadership skills as a school community member and teacher leader.

What is the best part of having international exchange teachers at your host school?
That such diverse backgrounds create a vibrant school culture where differences are valued and celebrated. Students’ interest in learning about other countries and cultures have sparked their curiosity and helped them gain background knowledge.

Give us some examples of how international J-1 teachers share their culture and how your host school shares the U.S. culture with them.
At Yearling Middle School, every year we celebrate Heritage Day where teachers from different backgrounds come together to display their cultural roots. International as well as American teachers prepare a cultural booth displaying cultural artifacts, provide insights into their culture and share food samples. Also, every teacher gets to introduce their culture to the school community.

Tell us about something you are most proud of that your host school taught you.
I am proud to be part of a school community that values empathy, collegiality, and building relationships with coworkers and students. It makes teaching easy and enjoyable. My fellow teachers are inspired to teach, and our students are excited to learn.

What does the program mean to you? Why would you recommend that U.S. schools continue to host international teachers?
Exchange teaching programs bridge the classroom with the world in a way that books alone cannot do it. It is a way to embrace global citizenship, strengthen collaboration through meaningful exchanges through diverse lenses, and cultivate empathy and inclusivity.

Thank you, Jhamcarlos, for sharing your remarkable program experience with us! We wish you a wonderful rest of your Teach USA Program, and all the best in your future!
