Last week, the Greenheart Exchange Work Travel Conference brought together a variety of industry stakeholders to discuss the impact of exchange programs. The event featured insightful presentations and engaging activities designed to enhance attendees’ understanding of the Summer Work Travel program.
U.S. Department of State Shared Insights on Successful Work Travel Programs
Dr. Barrett Haga and Gia Crawford provided an overview of how the Summer Work Travel program aligns with American diplomacy goals. Dr. Haga emphasized the importance of the connections formed between BridgeUSA participants and Americans, creating lasting memories, and fostering cultural exchange. Ms. Crawford shared valuable statistics from program satisfaction surveys, shedding light on successes and areas for program improvement. Notably, safe, affordable housing and transportation options were top concerns among participants, in addition to issues related to changes in placement conditions, such as wages and work hours.
Advocacy for Exchange Programs is important in this election year
Mark Overmann, Director of The Alliance for International Exchange, discussed the current landscape of BridgeUSA programs in Washington, DC. He stressed the need for advocacy at both local and national levels, particularly as upcoming elections could impact these initiatives.

Current and former Greenheart Ambassador scholars shared personal stories about their experiences on the program and how it transformed their lives.
Sprintax helps Navigate the U.S. Tax System
On day two of the Work Travel Conference, Neil Duffy, Associate Vice President of Sprintax, guided attendees through the complexities of the U.S. tax system for non-residents. He also shared compelling statistics on the annual economic contributions of BridgeUSA participants to the U.S. economy.
Intercultural Workshop Fostered Empathy and Understanding
Led by Greenheart Exchange Placement Manager Marcus Wright, this workshop offered attendees a chance for self-reflection as they explored their cultural identities and experiences with cultural conflict. The session fostered empathy and provided deeper insight into the challenges faced by BridgeUSA participants in the United States.
Stakeholder Conversations
These sessions allowed groups to discuss challenges, share best practices, and celebrate successes within the program. This open dialogue emphasized the importance of community and mutual support among organizations working to enhance the participant experience.
Volunteer Activity
The conference concluded with a volunteer opportunity at Cradles to Crayons, where attendees came together to support local children in need. This experience not only strengthened bonds among participants but also allowed them to make a meaningful impact in the Chicago community.
