Greenheart Teacher is Recognized with a Special Education Excellence Award

Our teacher Joje Dahan at Rising Star SPED Academy in California recently received a Special Education Excellence Award at the Recognition Award Ceremony! Read on to hear her story and learn about the impact of Greenheart’s Teach USA Program.

What is your name, the name of your school, and your role at the school?

My name is Joje Martinez Dahan. I work at a non-public school in California as a Special Education Teacher in a self-contained classroom supporting High school students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.

Has the Teach USA Program had a long-term impact on you? Tell us how.

Yes. The program has strengthened my instructional practices, cultural competence, and adaptability, shaping me into a more reflective and globally minded educator.

What did you learn during your Teach USA experience?

I learned to differentiate instruction more effectively, implement structured routines, and use data-driven strategies like ULS and IXL to support individualized learning.

How did the Teach USA Program help you get to where you are today?

It provided me with professional opportunities, mentorship, and real classroom experience in the U.S., allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.

What is the best part of having international exchange teachers at your host school?

They bring diverse perspectives, teaching styles, and cultural awareness that enrich both staff collaboration and student learning.

Give us examples of how international teachers share their culture and how your host school shares U.S. culture.

International teachers share traditions, food, language, and celebrations. In return, schools introduce American holidays, classroom systems, and community practices.

What cultural/community events did you share?

I shared Filipino celebrations like cultural traditions with songs and dances, while participating in U.S. events such as staff appreciation, school spirit days, and community gatherings. Yes, I have photos documenting these experiences.

Tell us something you are most proud of that your host school taught you.

I am most proud of developing strong classroom management and building meaningful relationships with parents and students with special needs.

What interested you about Greenheart Teach USA Program?

I was drawn to its mission of cultural exchange, professional growth, and the opportunity to teach in a diverse educational system.

What does the program mean to you? Why recommend it?

The Greenheart exchange program represents growth, opportunity, and connection. I highly recommend it because it benefits both educators and schools by fostering diversity, innovation, and global understanding.

Final Thoughts!

I am truly honored to share that I will be receiving a Special Education Excellent Teacher Award this Monday at the Fremont Downtown Center. The SERA (Special Education Recognition Award / Staff Excellence Recognition Award) is typically given to educators who demonstrate exceptional impact in supporting students with diverse learning needs, recognizing those who go beyond standard practice in delivering high-quality, inclusive education.

I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support, kindness, and encouragement throughout my journey—this recognition would not have been possible without you. I thank Greenheart for the continued guidance and for being such a meaningful part of my growth and success.

Thank you Joje for sharing your amazing program and achievements story with us! You are an inspiration to international teachers.
