“My exchange program has had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional growth”

My name is Sara, and I participated in the Greenheart Work and Travel USA program at the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation in Medora, North Dakota, where I worked as a host and cashier at Theodore’s Dining Room.

My exchange program has had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional growth. Before coming to the United States, I was excited to experience a new culture, but I never imagined how much I would grow in confidence, independence, and communication skills. Working in a fast-paced restaurant taught me how to stay organized, solve problems under pressure, and provide excellent customer service while working with people from many different countries and backgrounds.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of teamwork. Every shift required us to support one another to create the best experience for our guests. I also learned to adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and appreciate different perspectives. These experiences have made me more confident in working with diverse teams, which will be invaluable as I pursue my career in sustainable architecture.

The exchange program also helped me get to where I am today. During my time in the United States, I had the opportunity to build professional connections, explore new career opportunities, and strengthen my leadership skills. These experiences motivated me to continue developing myself both academically and professionally, and they played a role in preparing me for the opportunity to attend the 2026 Greenheart Global Leaders Conference.

Outside of work, I enjoyed participating in community activities and experiencing American culture in Medora. I volunteered at local events, including community clean-up activities and helping during the famous Pitchfork Fondue, where I worked alongside staff and volunteers to welcome visitors from around the world. These experiences allowed me to connect with the local community while sharing my own Egyptian culture with my coworkers and friends.

What interested me most about Greenheart’s exchange programs was the opportunity to combine cultural exchange with professional development. It was much more than a summer job—it was an experience that challenged me to grow, build lifelong friendships, and develop skills that will benefit me throughout my career. I am grateful to Greenheart, the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, and everyone who made this incredible journey possible.

Thank you, Sara, for sharing your amazing Work and Travel Program experiences with us! We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
