My journey to Savannah!
My name is Janine Burger, from South Africa, currently working at JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District as a Cook for my Greenheart Exchange Internship. Since coming to Savannah, I learned to appreciate the beauty in the simple things around me. The city of Savannah is lovely with its lush squares and stunning architecture. I have never been excited about history, but Savannah has made me interested in every little historical fact. There are so many stories to uncover and enjoy when touring this true American jewel of a city.
My Beautiful Host Community!
Savannah is also truly a marvel since it attracts many tourists; you can meet the most interesting people. I find myself stuck talking to shop keepers and bar tenders; loving the thought provoking conversations to be had.
Savannah has a sizable Latin American population. I find myself drawn to these amazing people and their cuisines, as a chef these bold flavors inspire me and I feel privileged to have been able to work for four months at the Savannah Tequila Co. There I learned Mexican cuisine and a little bit of Spanish, yet my Spanish still needs a lot of work. All I have to say is: “Con queso, por favor!”

My Greenheart’s Internship Experience
Thus far in my internship the most fun I had was on 4th of July. I enjoyed every minute of working that day! There was so much fun to be had and a lot of American spirit going around to the hotel. The main event was helping out at Myrtle & Rose Rooftop Bar and getting to enjoy the Riverside District firework display afterwards. Happy 250th years of independence America!
Doing an Internship with Greenheart
For anyone thinking about doing an internship in the U.S., I would recommend Greenheart. I feel safe and secure here in the U.S. to enjoy my internship and focus on having fun and learning. Greenheart does regular check-ins to ensure program participants are safe and compliant by program requirements.
My Participation at Greenheart Global Leadership Conference (GGLC)
I had the opportunity to go to Washington DC to participate in the 2026 GGLC. I was the only one at my host organization to have that opportunity, which highlights Greenheart as a supportive sponsor.
I hope to continue having more memorable moments in the U.S. during my exchange program and I am sure I will remember this internship for the rest of my life.
Thank you, Janine! We do wish you a wonderful remainder of your program and all the success in your future endeavors!
